Literacy Project

The Mercy Outreach Ministry is concerned about the woeful lack of primary education for the little ones of Haiti.

Though the parents are only charged $5.00 per child for a full school year, the majority of the parents are too poor to afford even this amount. As a result, the children cannot attend school, and are consigned to utter illiteracy for the rest of their lives.

Can you donate $5 to help a child?

We can help bring light into their darkness. The construction of a church building not only brings light into their spiritual darkness, but a church building is a school building, a medical clinic and a community meeting place. This is a better than average rural classroom in Anse-a-veau.

The schools can only provide the most basic education. There is a noticeable absence of colorful primary teaching aids, etc. Children must use one pencil for an entire semester. Paper is very precious and scarce. Blackboards are mere sheets of wood painted as a chalkboard! Yet, the children are eager to learn, and are willing to sit in hot buildings on hard benches with their stomachs crying out for food. The photo on the right is the only toilet for over 500 children at the school in Anse-a-veau! We need solar-equipped, waterless composing toilets and/or other environmentally friendly and safe waste systems that will eliminate odor and convert the waste into a compost that can be used for planting trees.

MOM is working to provide more classrooms and teachers. These classrooms are the most basic structures of wood and thatch until we can raise funds to provide better buildings. The most important thing is to provide the education for the little ones. This was the only blackboard in this school until MOM purchased materials and blackboards were made for many of the schools. These photos are of the church and school in Robio, a village located in a mountainous region of Haiti in Fond Verette. Pastor Ulfotene Jerome is both the pastor and teacher. Teacher Solitaire Pierre is on the left. These two courageous men have taken on the big job of educating many children with little or nothing! They need your help!

Thank you for the pencils! These children were delighted to have a single pencil to use in school.

We want to get our computer program going again. Unfortunately, the refurbished computers that wereset up in 2002 have all expired! The kids were so happy when they saw their first computer in their school in 2002. Let’s bring that joy and technology back to them so that they can cross the great technology divide that exists for the kids in remote areas without electricity. Generators must be used and they are costly. God has provided electricity through the Sun, and we need to harness the energy of the sun!
